What a car insurance group actually is
Every car registered in the UK before August 2024 sits on a scale from 1 to 50, set by the Group Rating Panel, a joint body combining the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and Thatcham Research. Group 1 is the cheapest to insure, group 50 the most expensive, and it's one of the first things any insurer looks at before considering anything about you personally.
Cars registered from 1 August 2024 onward use a newer system instead: the Vehicle Risk Rating (VRR), which scores a car from 1 to 99 across five separate risk categories rather than one combined number. It works the same way in practice, lower is cheaper, but breaks the assessment down more granularly. Both systems ran in parallel for the first 18 months after VRR launched in September 2024.
What actually determines the group
The panel assesses around 125 individual factors, but they roll up into a handful of dominant ones:
- Repair cost, the single biggest factor. Thatcham crash-tests every new model at a standardised 15km/h impact and prices the parts and labour to fix it.
- Parts price and availability, some cars have expensive or hard-to-source components even for otherwise minor damage.
- Vehicle value, since a total loss claim costs an insurer more on a pricier car.
- Performance, faster cars statistically claim more.
- Security and safety features, better anti-theft and safety tech can lower a group.
Your own age, postcode, driving history, and annual mileage still shape the final price on top of this, the group sets the baseline, not the final number.
Typical cost by group band

Indicative figures from published UK cost index data (ABI and Confused.com sourced), not DS Auto Labs' own data. Individual quotes vary by driver, postcode, and insurer. Several models in our Car Database, including the Fiesta, Golf, Sportage, Octavia, 3 Series, and C-Class, fall within these exact bands.
How to actually lower your group-driven cost
- Choose a lower-group car in the first place, especially for a young or new driver, where the group affects the premium more than age, postcode, or no-claims history combined.
- Check the specific variant, not just the model name. A 1.0-litre Fiesta and a 1.5-litre ST-Line Fiesta can sit in meaningfully different groups despite sharing a name.
- Factory security features help. An alarm, immobiliser, and tracker can all reduce a group rating slightly.
- A car's insurance group is fixed, it doesn't change with age or mileage, so buying an older example of a low-group car doesn't add extra insurance-group savings on top, though the car's own value depreciating can affect comprehensive cover cost separately.
Compare real quotes
Once you know roughly where a car sits, an actual quote depends on your own details, which only a real insurer or comparison site can price. These are independent, FCA-authorised UK comparison services, not run by DS Auto Labs.

Frequently asked questions
What is a car insurance group?
A number from 1 to 50 assigned to every UK car registered before August 2024 by the Group Rating Panel (the ABI and Thatcham Research), based on repair cost, parts price and availability, performance, safety, and security. Group 1 is the cheapest to insure, group 50 the most expensive.
What is the Vehicle Risk Rating and how is it different?
The Vehicle Risk Rating (VRR) is Thatcham Research's replacement for the 1-50 group system, applying to cars first registered from 1 August 2024 onward. It scores a car from 1 to 99 across five separate risk categories rather than one combined number, but works the same way: lower is cheaper to insure.
Does DS Auto Labs provide insurance quotes?
No. Giving actual insurance price quotes is a regulated financial services activity in the UK, requiring FCA authorisation. This page explains how insurance groups and pricing actually work, and links out to established, FCA-authorised comparison sites for an actual quote.
