What to know
In 2025, Volkswagen Golf cars passed their MOT first time 75.0% of the time, across 875,902 tests. That is 2.1 points above Volkswagen's overall brand average of 72.9% and 2.6 points above the national average of 72.4%.
Age explains much of the difference between models. Pass rates fall steeply as cars get older, for every make, so a model with many old cars on the road looks worse than it is, and a recent model looks better. This compares the Volkswagen Golf with the typical UK car of the same age.

Allowing for the age mix of the cars tested, a typical UK car would be expected to pass about 70.3% of the time. The Volkswagen Golf passed at 75.0%, which is 4.7 points above that expected rate.
A model average says little about one particular car, so check its own MOT history for repeated advisories, past failures and mileage.
Technology: the eighth-generation Golf
This section covers the eighth-generation (Mk8) Golf, on sale in the UK since 2020. DVSA's MOT figures above include older Golfs, which make up most of the cars tested.
Engines and gearboxes

- Petrol (TSI): 1.0-litre at 90 or 110 PS and 1.5-litre at 130 or 150 PS. From the 2024 update the 1.5 range was simplified to 115 or 150 PS (Wikipedia).
- Mild hybrid (eTSI): a 48-volt system at 110, 130 or 150 PS, DSG automatic only. This is a small battery and motor-generator that assists the engine but cannot drive the car on its own.
- Diesel (TDI): 2.0-litre at 115 or 150 PS, with twin AdBlue treatment.
- Plug-in hybrid: the eHybrid and GTE pair a 1.4 TSI with a 13 kWh battery (204 to 245 PS), good for roughly 60 km on electric power. The updated GTE uses a 1.5 TSI with a 19.7 kWh battery.
- Performance: GTI at 245 PS (265 PS after the update) and Golf R at 320 PS (333 PS after the update).
- Gearboxes: at launch the petrol cars came with a six-speed manual and the diesels with a seven-speed DSG automatic, while mild-hybrid eTSI cars are DSG only (Auto Express, Wikipedia). Later versions vary, so check which gearbox a used car has.
Safety and driver aids

- Euro NCAP, 2019: five stars. Adult occupant 95%, child occupant 89%, vulnerable road users 76%, safety assist 78% (1.5 petrol, Comfortline). Standard equipment included automatic emergency braking that detects pedestrians and cyclists, lane assist and speed assistance.
- Euro NCAP reassessed it in 2025 and again awarded five stars: adult occupant 80%, child occupant 86%, vulnerable road users 85%, safety assist 79% (1.5 petrol, Life). Euro NCAP says the reassessment followed improvements made by Volkswagen. The tests differ between years, so the two sets of percentages are not like-for-like.
- Car2X: the Golf was the first Volkswagen with vehicle-to-vehicle and infrastructure warnings, exchanging data with other equipped vehicles within about 800 metres (Euro NCAP, Wikipedia).
- Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control and lane keeping at speeds up to 210 km/h and uses steering-wheel sensors to check the driver's hands are on (Wikipedia). Adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors are standard on Life (Auto Express).
Infotainment and connectivity

- A fully digital driver display and an 8.25-inch or 10-inch touchscreen came with the car at launch (Wikipedia). Life has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless phone charging and DAB radio (Auto Express).
- The launch car replaced many physical controls with touch-sensitive panels. Auto Express reports that the Golf ranked last of 75 cars for dashboard user-friendliness in the 2021 Driver Power survey.
- The 2024 update added the MIB4 system with 10.4-inch or 12.9-inch screens, brought back physical steering-wheel buttons after customer feedback, and added illuminated climate sliders. A ChatGPT-based voice assistant was added, with mixed reviews (Wikipedia).
- Minor software updates can be applied over the air, but major ones need a dealer visit (Auto Express).
Technology to check on a used one
- Software: Auto Express says software errors are the most common owner complaint, including the engine cutting out, spurious safety warnings, phone-pairing problems and keyless-entry glitches. What Car? adds slow or failed touchscreens and faults with the SOS button.
- Reliability surveys: What Car? ranks the Mk8 diesel last of 25 family cars (70.4%) and the petrol 22nd of 25 (84.1%) in its Reliability Survey, as reported on its Golf reliability page.
- Recalls: What Car? lists four notices, including eCall software on 4,630 cars and a brake-fluid reservoir heat mat on 26,721 cars from a limited production period. Check any car by registration.
