What Is Engine Knocking and Should You Worry?
Engine knocking covers a range of different noises with genuinely different levels of seriousness, from a cheap fix to something that can end an engine's life if ignored, which makes it worth understanding rather than dismissing.
What "knocking" usually refers to
Most commonly, it describes a metallic knocking or pinging sound, often more noticeable under acceleration or load, caused by fuel combusting unevenly inside the cylinder rather than igniting cleanly from the spark alone. Older mechanics call this "pinking." It's related to, but distinct from, a deeper, more mechanical knocking that suggests an actual internal component problem.
Common, less serious causes
- Using a lower octane fuel than the engine is designed for
- Carbon build-up inside the combustion chamber
- A faulty knock sensor giving a false reading, though this is rarer
More serious causes worth acting on immediately
- Worn big-end or main bearings, producing a deeper, more rhythmic knock
- Low oil pressure, which can quickly turn into serious internal damage if ignored
- A failing timing component affecting valve and piston timing
How to tell which you're dealing with
A knock that appears only under load or acceleration and sounds relatively light is more likely the fuel-related kind. A knock that's present at idle, gets worse with engine speed regardless of load, or sounds deep and mechanical is worth treating as serious and getting looked at before driving further. If in doubt, treating it as the more serious possibility is the safer default, since continuing to drive on genuine bearing wear can destroy the engine within a short distance.
