Cold weather doesn't just make a car unpleasant to get into, it genuinely changes how the engine behaves, and understanding why helps explain some habits worth adopting through winter.
Why cold starts are harder on an engine
Oil thickens in cold temperatures, which means it takes longer to circulate fully and protect moving parts properly in the first moments after starting. This is exactly why cold starts cause disproportionately more engine wear than starts in mild weather, and why a gentle first minute of driving, rather than harsh acceleration straight away, matters more in winter than in summer.
Fuel and combustion in cold conditions
Petrol vaporises less readily in cold air, which is part of why engines can run slightly rough for the first minute or two after a cold start, before the engine management system fully adjusts. This is normal and not usually a fault, provided it settles down quickly.
What genuinely helps through winter

- Checking antifreeze concentration, not just topping up with plain water
- Driving off gently for the first minute rather than accelerating hard immediately
What doesn't actually help
Long idling to "warm the engine up" before driving is largely a myth for modern engines. It burns fuel without meaningfully warming the engine, since an engine warms faster under gentle load than sitting stationary. A short period to let oil begin circulating, followed by gentle driving, achieves the same result faster.
