Why brake fluid degrades even sitting still
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air over time, even through the tiny gaps in a sealed system. That absorbed water lowers the fluid's boiling point significantly. Since brakes generate real heat, a lowered boiling point means the fluid can start to vaporise under hard or repeated braking, creating compressible gas bubbles in a system that's meant to be fully liquid and incompressible.
What that actually feels like
A spongy or soft brake pedal, particularly noticeable after a long descent or repeated hard braking, can be a sign of moisture-affected fluid starting to vaporise under heat. This is a genuine safety issue, since it directly reduces braking effectiveness exactly when you need it most.
How often it should be changed
Most manufacturers recommend every 2 years regardless of mileage, since the degradation is time-based rather than distance-based. This is often overlooked because it isn't part of a basic service and doesn't show up as a dashboard warning the way other fluids might.
